When was the last time you felt the grass between your toes? It's been ten years, for me...not due to lack of available grass, so much as lack of feeling in my feet and legs caused by Multiple Sclerosis. MS introduces a variety of sensory oddities to a body's repertoire as one's own immune system gets bored and attacks what it's meant to protect; I was diagnosed 19 years ago. As a seamstress, artist, decorator, gardener, cross-stitch enthusiast, and all 'round tactile individual, when the nerves in my hands started making everything I touched feel like cotton-balls, with constant pins and needles, I was inconvenienced and disappointed. No big deal, that's life with a disease. When the MS nerve damage altered sensation in my feet, however, mobility issues began as I could not 'feel' the ground beneath me....like when both legs fall asleep and you try to walk on them. I never wear socks because my feet don't sense temperature. My toes (and a few fingers) do not get the typical 'pruny' nerve response intended to improve grip in water, so that's weird.
Yesterday, however, I had a session with Daphne's Healing Hands and by the end of it, with eyes closed, could feel the texture of the blanket that had been covering my feet the whole time without my even knowing! I rubbed my feet against each other, felt how supple they were from a pedicure my fella gave my dead feet weeks ago. I sat up, put my feet on the carpet and wiggled my toes through the thick tufts of cream shag.
Then this morning, planting myself firmly on the dewy backyard grass, I closed my eyes, crinkled the greens beneath me, and gave gratitude to my conduit, Daphne, for the renewed ability to truly connect with my own body!!
So I ask you again: When was the last time you felt the grass between your toes?
